A double-pane window with condensation inside and insufficient caulking around it A reliable list of to-do's before winter comes could really help avoid a costly situation!

It’s easy to remember what your family needs for a Dutchess County winter but consider what your home needs as well. Some simple home strategy prep in the Fall months can help avoid a very costly and inconvenient experience in your Poughkeepsie home this, and every winter.

Make a “Check it and Fix it” list of to-dos’ around the house, you’ll want to include things like:

-Winter heating costs- putting some savings aside for unexpected issues like pipes breaking, heating system malfunctions and plumbing failures.

-Check the windows and doors for drafts and insulate or seal as needed. Put in storm windows and doors if you have them. Don’t forget the basement.

-Hire a professional to perform a furnace inspection as well as having the dryer vents and duct work cleaned. We recommend this yearly at least.

-Drain any water from outdoor faucets, spigots, hoses and sprinklers. Locate water sources if they need to be shut off in an emergency. Use heat tape on problem pipes inside the home to help prevent them from freezing.

-Have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned if needed.

-If any pipes or ducts travel through an exterior wall, use caulking or weather stripping around entry points.

Tackle one or two of these tasks at a time, enlist family members for help and you’ll be done in no time. It’s worth the prep to help avoid a potential situation.
